SEAMUS 2008 - National Conference, April 3-5, 2008
Welcome to the website for the 2008 National Conference of the Society for Electroacoustic Music in the United States, hosted April 3-5, 2008 by The University of Utah's School of Music in Salt Lake City. Following a national call for participation, approximately 100 recent electro-acoustic compositions, videos, and papers were selected and presented at the conference. Please visit SEAMUSOnline to see photos, read papers, and hear music and panel discussions from the SEAMUS 2008 National Conference.
SEAMUS 2008 was dedicated to pioneering electroacoustic composer Vladimir Ussachevsky, in residence at the University of Utah from 1970 to 1990. The conference included performances of his works Slow Dance, for EVI and piano, performed by Nyle Steiner and Heather Conner, and Colloquy, for orchestra and tape, performed by the Utah Philharmonia, conducted by Robert Baldwin. In addition to several paper presentations focusing on Vladimir Ussachevsky, the conference included a memorable panel discussion (with Eric Chasalow, Brad Garton, Ralph Hartsock, Arthur Kreiger, John Paulson, Terry Pender, Carl Rahkonen, and Nyle Steiner) on his legacy; and this year's SEAMUS AWARD winner, Miller Puckette, presented a lecture entitled Electronics encounters 'traditional' instruments (in tribute to Ussachevsky). There were too many more programming highlights at the conference to be listed here, but of particular note was Concert 7, which included Velocity Studies V: NGate, for trumpet and electronics, a recent work by late composer Allen Strange, to whom the concert was dedicated, and who was remembered and honored at the conference banquet.
I wish to thank all participants for helping to make hosting SEAMUS 2008 a truly rewarding and memorable experience!
Sincerely,
Miguel Chuaqui
